Explorer Scout Uniform

What to wear

The Explorer Scout uniform consists of the following:

  • Official beige shirt
  • Group or District scarf (aka necker) and woggle
    • 2nd Ondle Group scarf is black on red
    • Nene Valley District scarf is black on yellow
  • Dark / navy blue or black trousers
  • Explorer or Young Leader belt

Official activity trousers are recommended, but not mandated.

Uniform should be clean and ironed. Neckers should be tidily rolled and secured with the woggle. Any informal wear on display should be practical and respect Scouting values (e.g. no offensive wording)

Full Explorer Scout uniform is to be worn for arrival and flag break, flag down and departure, and other ceremonies, and when acting as a Young Leader for other Sections.

For some activities you might wish to wear a t-shirt or similar under your Scout shirt, or bring a jumper, and dress down or layer up for the activity.

Off-site activities

When meeting away from the JSC for an adventurous activity (such as a hike), Explorers are expected to wear appropriate clothing and otherwise come equipped as appropriate to the activity.

Kit lists may be issued or discussed but Explorers are responsible for equipping themselves correctly.

In all cases a Group or District scarf must be warn, unless instructed by a leader to remove them for safety reasons.

Be prepared…

Formal occasions or Travel

When participating in formal occasions, such as St George’s Day or Remembrance Parades, or when travelling as a unit, Explorers must wear full uniform as above with polished, neat, black shoes (generally school shoes). Trousers must be official activity trousers or school (or similarly neat) trousers!

If you do not have, or cannot afford, any necessary clothing or equipment please let a leader know in confidence.

Badge positions

Badge positions

All badges go in a specific location on the uniform. Please see the diagram opposite to see where they should go.

Various vendors make glues designed specifically for attaching badges. However, we find that sewing is generally more robust and repairable, which is a key consideration given the active nature of Explorer Scouting.

Staged and Core badges

Members transferring from a younger section transfer some badges to their Explorer shirt:

  • Membership Award
  • Group, district & county markings
  • Staged activity badges (e.g. Navigator & Hikes Away)
  • Participation Awards
  • Moving On Award (from Scouts)
  • Chief’s Scouts Award (highest earned)

New members

New members will be given their Membership Award and unit markings when they make their Promise and are formally invested in the Unit. Until then they should wear a blank shirt.

Parents!

Explorer Scouts are old enough to sew their own badges on, and knowing how to sew is a life skill!
